2 Stars Not too bad,but…
Well, we picked the TV up at a special sale at BrandSmart a few days ago, and at first it seemed like a great bargain. But here are the few things we didn’t like about it: when I connected HDMI DVD/5.1 surround sound system to it, I found out that it loses the signal every time you have to pause the movie for whatever reason. Going back to unpausing it didn’t work always- it would lose the signal and just the sound would come on, then I would have to shut it down and start it again, and sometimes that didn’t help neither. Very disappointed! This happened with both HDMI connectors. The other major issue we had was the TV must have a very narrow viewing angle because when we put it a little above regular viewing position (we used it in the bedroom and when you lay down you can’t really position it straigh on level with your feet, it has to stay a bit higher) the clarity went out and the picture looked like an old film negative, where you see silhouettes in places where black color was involved and you’d have to stand up and have to watch it at a “straigh at your eyes” angle or the picture suffered. That was the final straw. TV went back, and for a couple of hundred dollars more, we got a Samsung, same dimentions, but the difference is just unbelievable. Same position of viewing, no picture problems at all… The price was right, but this LG leaves a lot to be desired.

5 Stars Great first time LCD
Finally time to upgrade from the portable black & white. Had a little Christmas money & started shopping around. First was looking at the larger sized Olivia’s at Target & Kmart. They seemed like quite the realestate for the $. Checked around & after listening to some of the online horror stories on returns, I got a little spooked. After a lot more review reading online, everything seemed to point to Samsung & Toshiba. Started checking them out at Circuit City & they looked fine, but the picture of the LG seemed to really pop, compaired to the other two. Had not planned at all on LG, but was really taken by the side by side picture comparison. Didn’t seem like it mattered which size you were looking at, LG seemed a little better. Hemmed & hawed for a couple of days & thought I’d go see what Best Buy had to offer. Wasn’t all that up on Best Buy & really wanted to give C.C. the business, but Best Buy had a reboxed unit for a really great price. Again, tried to be very subjective on the picture quality as they had all three brands & darn-it, no matter what size you looked at, from the big 40somethings on down, LG seemed to have a picture that was more alive.

I really wanted to get a bigger screen, & after watching the Super Bowl on it, it’s not the best for watching sports on – size wise – but I felt quite good with myself for not having to put anything on the credit card. Paid off is a much better feeling.

So, it’s been several months now, have pretty well mastered the set & am still quite happy with the purchase. It’s a really great looking set, you can get some pretty impressive sound out of the stock speakers, you can see it from some extreem side angles – happy all around.

Lot’s of inputs, but have only used the DVD & VHS hookups so far. I’d definitatly recommend this little LG. – As a side note, just got back from a hotel in Colorado Springs that had LG 42″ers in the rooms. The maintenace guys told me that the ones they got had issues with high elevation. Might want to check into that, if applicable.

4 Stars Great Picture – Highly Recommended
I went to a couple of our local big box stores and took a look at all the flat-panels of around this size as a second TV.

Pros:

This model (and several other LGs of various sizes that we saw) definately had the most pleasing ‘out of the box’ picture quality. Several others had less vibrant images or narrower viewing angles or both. The Sony screens had very vibrant images that were pleasing from a distance, but suffered from jagged edges due to poor anti-aliasing. The image on this screen has great color, great contrast, and excellent anti-aliasing. That means the picture is not only great in HD, but also very pleasing in standard TV resolution.

Other factors favoring this HDTV are a great build quality and a screen that does an excellent job of maintaining brightness and clarity when viewed off-angle – even off-angle high/low.

Cons:

If I have one minor issue, it’s that there the aspect ratio control includes no 16:9, proportional (non-distorting) zoom. Programs are transmitted in dozens of different formats these days. It’s not that unusual to find a program that matches the full screen aspect ratio, but has a significant border on all sides. We have another HD set that allows me to zoom the whole picture up without any change in aspect ratio (because changing the aspect ratio would distort the picture). This set does not offer that adjustment.

My only other minor nit-pick with this product is that we have, through our local cable company (Cablevision), a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250 HD cable box. Although it’s a breeze to hook up to the LG, using a single HDMI cable, the remote on the cable box does not have a code to program it to control the LG brand. Although I’ve found alternate codes that give most of the functionality, I cannot use the mute button on the cable box remote for this set. Although this is certainly not LG’s fault, it is another minor inconvenience.

Conclusion:

All things considered, we’re very happy with this HD screen. The small negatives are certainly outweighed by the excellent image and build quality – the most important measures of performance.

5 Stars Love it! 1080p @ 120 Hz is sweet!
I have had this HDTV for about 2 days now. I upgraded to the 37LH40 from an LG 30″ wide screen 720p/1080i CRT (tube).

Right away I noticed a huge difference in clarity/detail with this one in the 1080p mode. I have a PS3 (connected via HDMI), Xbox 360 (via component cable), Directv (HDMI) and a standard upconvert dvd player (via HDMI).

The difference between 60Hz and 120Hz could easily be seen when the store demos were scrolling baseball team logos sideways on a black screen. The 60Hz models were jerking the logos while the 120Hz models were MUCH MUCH smoother. I’m looking forward to watching NFL games this year on this LCD!

The only things I wish the 37LH40 had is a back-lit remote. The LCD screen comes close to the black color displayed on my previous HDTV tube model, but the blacks are a bit darker on the tube. Perhaps with some more fine tuning, I can get it right.

As far as the lack of a headphone jack/speakers, I don’t use them on the tv. I play my sound thru a surround sound system via optical cable from the tv.

OVERALL, I’m very happy with the purchase. I gave up a bigger screen size to get the 120Hz model, which I think was worth it for what I will be using the HDTV for.

I’ve had this product for about a month and have had no problems. I currently have my satellite dish, x-box, laptop and wii hooked up 2 it. The x-box and computer look awesome….I absolutly destroy people in cod4 becuase of the picture and the speed. My laptop looks really well also, my laptop screen is 1200p but still works well on the tv. I bought the tv because I love hockey and wanted a really quick response time; my LG has the best picture I’ve seen so far for hockey. The menu is easy to use and adjusting the picture with as much detail as you want is simple. The tv saves your settings for each different input, this feature makes things very convenient. The only bad thing I can say is that original viewing settings are all dark, I’ve had to adjust them all to get a picture I want. Sound is decent nothing great but not bad. Overall I would recomend, the response time is awesome and the tv cost only around 200 dollars more then tv’s with response times not even half as fast.

5 Stars This is a great television and easy to use.
I have had this television for two weeks. I got it after being greatly disappointed with a Vizio 37 inch 1080p. The difference between the two was very noticeable. The picture and sound are far superior. Even when comparing to the 720p LG 37 inch, this one is much better. The television was very easy to set up. The amount of HDMI, component and AV inputs are more than adequate for any standard home theater set up. I read one review that gave this television low marks for not having a headphone jack. I feel that if you are going to get a television of this caliber, you will get a good receiver that supports headphones. I feel that is an unimportant option and I prefer having that fourth HDMI port. The energy saving option is a nice addition, although if you get a lot of sun, you need to keep that setting low during the day. All menu options are easy to navigate. I love that the television knows what types of connections you have. When scrolling through inputs, it highlights the inputs that have devices connected. Overall, this is a great TV and I highly recommend it.

This set was delivered today and is going back unopened tomorrow.

When I was finally able to see the manual, I discovered that something as simple as a headphone jack was not available.

A phone call to LG confirmed that this standard feature is absent on ALL 2009 LG TV sets!

People are asked to spend years with a set, never able to watch & listen without disturbing others in the household. If LG was cheap enough to omit this feature, I worried whether there might be other quality shortcuts.

Also, the manual strongly encourages screwing the stand to the furniture on which the TV will sit so as to avoid it tipping over forward (they even provide the screw). You get to choose between being unsafe or drilling into your furniture. Gee! But not LG.

Easy set up and TV looks great. For both HD and non-HD programs the picture quality is great. I found the audio to be really weak, not loud enough and reverb at higher volumes; I guess that is to be expected with tiny speakers that cast the sound out of the bottom of the tv and not outwards toward the viewing area.

Please learn from my mistake and don’t buy this TV! The picture quality doesn’t hold a candle to my old fashioned Sony 27-inch. The swivel stand is weak and shaky and the audio is too low at full volume. In my opinion anyone who gives a thumbs-up to this TV is either too easily satisfied or infatuated with the fact that the picture is bigger than their old set. The dark colors fade into each other and you can never adjust the picture to get it just right. Unless you’re in a straight line in front of the set at all times the picture is dark and extremely disappointing. Do yourself a favor: if you want real quality buy one of the better plasmas or save up to buy a higher quality LCD set. Trust me on this, “entry level” or not no one should throw away their money on this junk. You’ve been warned!

UPDATE:

Well its been two months and I stand by everything I said. I’ve gotten used to watching it although that doesn’t mean I like seeing anyone on TV who wears black pants against a black wall look like he he’s wearing the wall since black colors run into each other as a solid blob of black. Mostly I just want to ask: What’s with the dopes who said my review was unhelpful (2 out of 2 to be exact)? Probably LG employees or just Kool-Aid drinking dolts. Try reading the Consumer Reports review, geniuses, where among other things this TV got the lowest rating of any 42 inch set on off-angle viewing. Yay! Let’s bring back the old “perfect stereo diamond” concept to TV!

5 Stars Great Quality LCD TV – Best In It’s Price Range
I purchased this model after extensive research and viewing comparible models at my local Buy More (or was it Best Buy?). This particular model was side by side with a 42″ plasma and I could not tell the differance. Initially I was leaning towards Plasma because of it’s reputation of less motion blur and better viewing angle, but I have to say that that reputation is outdated. I saw no motion blur in fast action sequences and the picture quality did not change until I was almost direct beside it.

What made me choose the LCD was the much lower power consumption of the LCDs (2 cents per killowatt hour vs. 9 cents for for the Plasma) and the brightness since it will used in a room with south-facing windows.

Whan I used it during a bright afternoon, it was even easier to view than the old 32″ CRT TV. The LCD screen seems more non-reflective than the old glass CRT screen.

Sound-wise it is excellent. I’m an old-school audiophile who enjoys good sound, and this sounds great with just a smidgen of bass increase in the settings. Since the sound is reflecting from the table-top and the wall behind it, the sound pacement can really matter. If for instance you wall-mount this model, the sound quality may be less pleasing and may require auxiliary speakers – that’s probably true for for ANY flat screen TV.

All in all I’m extremely pleased.

Very impressed. My roommate recently moved out and took his 50″ Samsung DLP with him. Fortunately, this TV was not only cheaper, but also MUCH higher quality than the Samsung. The entire Southern wall of our apartment is a sliding glass window, and this TV shows absolutely no glare. The viewing angle is amazing! The contrast is beautiful – I have never seen a TV that looks this sexy.

I would STRONGLY recommend this TV to anyone looking for a 42″. 720p looks 100% the same as 1080p for this size TV – you’d be paying more solely for bragging rights (but anyone who knows better will be laughing at you).

My only complaint about this is the speakers. For any AV input, the speakers are plenty loud and I set the volume to 15 out of 100. However, for cable the sound is greatly diminished and I have to turn the volume up to 60 or higher. You don’t want to be using a T extensively at near maximum volume because the speakers will eventually tear. I have some loud computer speakers, but unfortunately there is no Audio Out jack that size on this TV, just the red/white RCA cables jacks. No problem though, I’ll just have to throw down a few bucks for a conversion cable.

Overall 5+++ stars. I bought this TV from [...] with an amazon card I simultaneously opened. I got 6% back just from using the card, and $[...] off my first purchase, so the TV only cost me around [...]. Shipping was free, and [...] got the TV here in less than a week in perfect condition.

Let’s face it…HDMI is a digital connection so there is no real difference between the “high quality” expensive brand and this. Sure those other ones might look fancier, but that is not worth paying an arm and a leg for!

2 Stars Be careful when buying HDMI cables
While I always have believed “You get what you pay for”, there are some products that you can skimp on. HDMI cables don’t appear to be one of them.

While I refuse to throw down $50 to $100 on an HDMI cable, I won’t ever buy another $10 cable again.

I should start by saying that I am a “professional troublshooter”. I have been in product support and IT for many many years, know how to read manuals and have more patience than anyone I know. Here’s my story:

I have a new Sony Bravia and bought two of these cables. One for the Comcast cable box, the other for a Blue Ray player (that I don’t have yet.)

1. I connected everything and switched to the HDMI 1 input…no signal found.

2. I moved over to HDMI 2…no signal found. Moved to 3 and 4…same thing.

3. I tried the second HDMI cable, same thing.

4. I took both cables and the box in the den and connected them to my 26″ Samsung. No problem at all. Now I am bummed….is my new Sony defective??

5. I took the cable box and cables back to the Sony…same issues.

6. After a couple of hours of drinking beer and screwing with it, I suddenly have connection. Yeehaw! But wait…

7. On the next day, I get my surround sound system, VCR and a few other things set up, which required some rearranging and connecting/disconnecting. Guess what? Again, no signal when I was done.

8. I finally give in and go to Walmart and buy another HDMI cable (a Phillips.)

9. I replaced the HDMI cable with the new one and bingo…the connection was detected immediately.

10. I disconnected, reconnected, changed inputs, etc. There were no problems at all. It was connected every time, right away.

All is not lost. I can apparently still use these cables on my 26″ Samsung, but the Sony didn’t like them for some reason.

I’m giving them 2 stars because on the Samsung they work fine, and worked well on the Sony for the short time that they actually worked. Just be careful.

My doctor’s office has one of these.

There are no significant viewing angle problems. However, the picture is blurry. It is obviously NOT just the source that is to blame, as there is another TV in the same office, connected to the same source, and its picture is much better.

Bring back the picture tube (CRT). Even the best LCDs still do not look as good as a quality picture tube, and the average LCD looks horrible. Most LCD screens I have seen really deserve 0 stars. (This unit at least deserves the 1 star.) Its amazing to see all the uninformed masses buy these LCDs just so they can hang it on the wall. That is the worst and dumbest reason to buy one, since the pic is inferior to a good picture tube.

5 Stars Wow, what a TV
I wanted a 32″ TV for my bedroom to replace a 19″ tube TV. I purchased this product at Bestbuy when it was on sale for $447.99 and this TV is worth every penny. The picture quality is good on low def channels and amazing on Hi def channels. A lot of people complained about the speakers on this TV, I’m guessing they were expecting Bose quality to come out of these little 10w speakers.

If you’re looking for a 32″ TV with amazing picture quality, this is the TV for you. The regular price tag of $599.99 would be asking more than this TV is worth.

5 Stars Great First LCD TV
I thought my 9 year old sony died but it was my directv receiver needed resetting. I got such a great deal on this tv at $448 from Brandsmart in Atlanta I thought I might as well keep it. I did not like it for the first day because of the sound and factory settings are not great. Keep playing with the adjustments and called LG and now the sound and picture are great. The stand is not difficult to put together if you notice one side of the holes are set farther apart than the other side and if you match them up they snap in. If you cut the auto volume off and the clear voice off the sound can get loud and the tru sound is awesome. I tried the settings CNET recommended but my tv is in a bright room so the expert 1 with a 2ire setting works much better than the 10IRE. Set the colors that are best for your eye. For the money I don’t think you will find a better tv and I don’t have it on a high def receiver yet and the picture is very good.
